SS01 (Trichocereus peruvianus)

SS01 (Trichocereus peruvianus)


The SS01 clone was brought into cultivation by Sacred Succulents. It is one of their oldest clones, going back many years and the number of hybrids that involves it is really high. It actually is a very blue Trichocereus that would usually be called Tr. peruvianus or Tr. macrogonus outside the SS nursery. The origin of this plant is unknown, but because of Sacred Succulent´s constant work with this clone, it is widely distributed.


Here is an excerpt from the Sacred Succulents description of SS01:


SS01 (Trichocereus peruvianus or Trichocereus macrogonus)


Columnar cactus up to 8´+ tall. Fat blue-green stems up to 6″ in diameter and 2″+ spines. Huge white nocturnal flowers. Can grow very fast; up to several feet a year. Tends to grow prostrate with age. We believe this to be a clone of either Trichocereus macrogonus or Trichocereus peruvianus. Cold hardy to 25° Fahrenheit. 


My personal impression of this plant is that it is one of the plants that were originally sold by Karel Knize. Those were really common at the time this clone showed up and I would not be surprised if it was one of them.


Sacred Succulents used this clone to create many hybrids, such as SS01 x Tr. pachanoi, SS01 x BBG, SS01 x Tom Juul´s Giant, SS01 x SS02 and many more. If you want to buy some seeds or cuttings of Trichocereus SS01, check out the Sacred Succulents website.

Those photos show the SS01 clone and are not hybrids. I will have a huge number of SS01 hybrid pics in my upcoming book SAN PEDRO HYBRIDS, which will be out in 2017.

SS02 (Trichocereus bridgesii)

SS02 stands for a certain clone brought into cultivation by Ben Kamm & his nursery Sacred Succulents. It is a relatively short-spined Trichocereus bridgesii that is known to produce some mind-boggling offspring. Most of the hybrids produced with this plants do not look like a standard Bridgesii and due to the fact that Sacred Succulents has been offering them for years, there is a huge number of different SS02 Hybrids available.


Here is an excerpt of Sacred Succulent´s description of their SS02:


Dense candelabra stands to 16´tall. Blue/green frosted stems up to 5″ in diameter with 5 – 7 ribs. Each areole bears 2 – 4 central spines up to 1.5″ long. White nocturnal flowers. The new growth on old stemps is often spineless. A distinct form of Trichocereus bridgesii. Cold hardy to 25° Fahrenheit.

Sacred Succulents used the SS02 to produce an endless list of great hybrids. Some of those are:


SS02 x SS01, SS02 x Trichocereus pachanoi, SS02 x Huancabamba, SS02 x BBG, SS02 x Luther Burbank, and many more. Apart from Sacred Succulents, the SS02 is used bymany other breeders, such as Misplant, Cactusaffinity.com and many more.

The Peruvianus clone SHARXX BLUE is a shortspined Peruvianus clone that was named after the SAB Member Sharxx. It originated from the well known DAWSONS cactus collection and was brought and named by the SAB member PD.

It probably is some kind of Matucana Peruvianus, much like the ICARO DNA type, the Los Gentiles or the Matucana Peruvianus that I have in stock here.


The plants are extremely blue and glaucous. Overall, this type of Trichocereus is one of my all-time favorite plants and it´s a very popular clone among Trichocereus breeders.

There definitely are plants that are similar and which are not genetically identical. Like I said before, there is a large number of various collection sites in Matucana and most of them are similar to the SHARXX BLUE.


This clone is sometimes available from Australian growers that gift or trade away cuttings every now and then. If you are interested in a SHARXX BLUE cutting, you might try to make a posting at the SAB forum. There also are growers that use it to produce Trichocereus hybrids. This year was the first year that Misplant offered some crosses that involved the SHARXX BLUE clone. It is also available from Trichocereus.com.au, who donated the pics below. 31

Trichocereus HB01 is a clone that originally comes from the Australian Shop HERBALISTICS. The plant was sourced from a garden in the Australian city Gatton in Queensland. The clone is usually short spined, but can get more spiny at a larger size.


I originally described this clone as some kind of Tr. peruvianus. Looking back, this was probably not the case. Through my extensive research for my book, I spent a lot of time researching Trichocereus puquiensis and I feel like the HB01 clone is very similar to what I know as Tr. puquiensis from Ritter´s old description. It basically is a long-spine Pachanoi that tends to have a higher number of ribs. Tr. puquiensis has usually 8 – 10 ribs and the pics that I got from the SAB member LHB2444 it definitely fits the description. It also has the orange spines that do NOT have swollen spine bases. That´s actually very typical for Tr. puquiensis as well.

The photos below (Zed240) show a plant that was labeled HB01 but looks a little bit different and has substantially longer spines as the one in the first two pics. That being said, there is a great variability within all the Trichocereus species, so I would not be surprised if that difference in spine length is caused by environmental factors. There also are 5 – 6 ribbed plants from Puquio and this second plant might be one of them. But no matter if the HB01 clone is actually a Trichocereus puquiensis or a Trichocereus peruvianus, it definitely as an amazing plant that will look awesome in your collection. The N1 clone comes from our friend Nitrogen. The pics were all provided by Nitrogen and he used this plant in numerous cross. It is a Trichocereus bridgesii with a massive spination and beautiful golden/orange spines.


The plants I saw have 6 ribs and 3 – 5 long and sharp spines that you really don´t want to get too close to. I am still trying to get flower pics of the N1 and I´ll update this post as soon as I am able to get some. This clone has a much more massive appearance than many other plants with Tr. bridgesii genetics.

LC002 – Trichocereus bridgesii


This plant is named after a member of the NOOK or SHOOMERY forum called Liberty Caps, who spread seeds involving LC001 and LC002 many years ago. All the plants grown from those crosses are NOT clones, but hybrids between Tr. pachanoi x Tr. bridgesii (LC001) and Trichocereus bridgesii x Tr. pachanoi (LC002).


Please note that this was quite a while ago and I assume it must have been around 2007 or 2008 when Liberty Caps gave away his seeds.

Though the LC002 mother plant looks highly unusual, it´s most likely a Tr. bridgesii! But I didn´t find so many pics myself; so please contact me if you happen to have pics of any of those hybrids.


I received some seeds back in 2008 or 2009, but was not able to get them to germinate because it´s been a while since they were traded around. On the internet, there only is very little information to be found about LC001 and LC002 and almost any source I found just talks about germinated some of this LC001 Trichocereus pachanoi x Trichocereus bridgesii and LC002 Trichocereus bridgesii x Tr. pachanoi seed.


This plant was grown by a SAB member in Australia and it´s very possible that offspring from the same cross looks a little bit different. So technically, this is not a clone but one of the plants that grew from the seed labeled LC002.

This plant comes from a SAB member called Nitrogen. He earned himself a great reputation by producing some of the most kickass San Pedro hybrids in the past 10 years. Some of his mother plants are the TPM, the TPC or the TPQC.


The TPM constantly switches between monstrose and non-monstrose growth, what gives it a truly unique look. This type of TPM is one of a kind, as it is known to pass down the monstrose gene to its F1 offspring. From all the seeds I´ve grown, I had a 50% mutation rate. And since it is rare that mutants produce mutant offspring, it´s definitely an amazing plant.

Nitrogen produced numerous hybrids with this plant, of which I´ll show some of them here.

This type was originally sold by the European seed shop GNOSTIC GARDEN, who are no longer in business. It should actually read GNOSTIC GARDEN CLONE, but the typo somehow stuck and it was called GNOSIS instead. Maybe we should go back to the original spelling of the name. But due to the fact that this clone was sold as GNOSIS for many years now, it´s probably best to keep everything as it is now.

GNOSTIC GARDEN delivered this clone to a large number of smaller shops, who imported it into Australia in the late 90s or 2000s. The Gnosis Garden Clone became of the most common „Peruvianus“ clones in Australia. And that´s remarkable because it actually is a Trichocereus cuzcoensis ;). The Cuzcoensis/Peruvianus labeling makes me think that this one probably originated from Knize, who is (BY FAR) the biggest source for different types from the Tr. cuzcoensis group  and it´s very likely that Gnostic Garden got their stock from Knize; either directly or indirectly through the hands of another retailer or wholesaler. The wide distribution makes this clone one of the most common strains in Australia. It has massive long spines with rounded spine bases and a typical Cuzcoensis appearance. Due to the fact that Knize has offered all kinds of types from the Cuzcoensis group over the past 50 years, it´s probably not possible to pin this clone down to a certain KK number.


The GNOSIS GARDEN CLONE (GNOSTIC GARDEN) was also sold by the SAB nursery and can be bought from them.

Omar (Trichocereus / Echinopsis)

Omar is a Trichocereus clone from Australia.



OMAR is a Trichocereus pachanoi clone that was most likely brought into circlulation by the former SAB members REV or Gomaos. The plant was also offered by the SAB shop, where it was sold alongside a similar hybrid called ALF. That leaves room for speculation and it´s possible that both plants (OMAR & ALF) were grown from the same seed pod or at least, were representatives of the same regional type. I personally have trouble looking at OMAR without seen anything but the well known PC Pachanoi „clone“, which is probably Friedrich  Ritter´s TRICHOCEREUS RIOMIZQUENSIS from Bolivia. This PC (short for predominate cultivar, as it is the most common type of Pachanoi throughout North America) is widely distributed all over Australia as well.

OMAR has the same yellowish look that almost all Tr. riomizquensis had in common. Besides, the areoles and the small stump spines are really typical. And on top of that, it has the same type of flower.

Again, I did not have the chance to observe this plant over the course of a few years, but what I´ve seen on some of the pics looks a lot like the predominate cultivar.

The ICARO DNA is not actually a clone but a seller who is very well know for it´s high quality Trichocereus seeds. The plants grow into amazingly dark to blue-green colored columns with strong spines. Sometimes, those spines are also dark brown colored and are among the most beautiful Trichocereus types I know. Personally, it´s definitely one of my all-time favorite cacti, simply based on the impressing look.


ICARO DNA sold a lot of seeds of this type in the past, which is why there is a large genetic variety available on the market. There also are certain clones that most likely were sourced from ICARO, such as the SHARXX BLUE or MAYBE the Rosei 2.

Apart from seedgrown material, there also is a relatively common clone that´s been traded around by people of the Trichocereus community, but the larger number of seedgrown plants make a differentiation hard.


I do have quite a few pics of this interesting type and I´ll post further updates about it as soon as I get more pics. Those been around for at least ten years now.

Plants that look like this were oftenly labeled as Trichocereus macrogonus and chances are that you bought some of these labeled as such. Their cold hardiness and soil requirements are pretty much identical to the ones from other Tr. peruvianus.

This interesting plant is a Trichocereus bridgesii clone that was originally sourced by the Australian SAB member Sir Jeans, who gave this clone to a handful of people. By sharing this clone over the course of various years, it was distributed into the collections of many people.

Definitely an interesting plant with long spines and a very glaucous Epidermis.  It´s not really completely untypical for a Tr. bridgesii, but it´s definitely one of the most impressive ones out there!
