As far as i know, this one was suspected to be Trichocereus validus. Personally, i think it is Trichocereus tacaquirensis but it´s hard to say just judging by those two pictures. Both plants are definitely similar and if you are interested in seeds of Trichocereus tacaquirensis, check out the new seeds I have in stock!

The plants we grew from those seeds looked 100% like a plant from the Tr. taquimbalensis group and it´s a common thing that plants related to Trichocereus taquimbalensis are labeled as Trichocereus validus. That is because Trichocereus validus probably came from Bolivia and both are probably very similar at an older age. At a younger age, that is definitely not the case.

Trichocereus pallarensis is a species that was described by Friedrich Ritter and listed in his WINTER catalogs starting in 1961! I do have most of the old Winter catalogs, but I unfortunately not the ones after 1960. But that´s not a problem as I have a whole lot of other information about Trichocereus pallarensis.

Ritter wrote about this species numerous times. He basically called this plant a „variety of Trichocereus pachanoi“, but described it as a new species just in case. Back then, it was common that botanists or taxonomists wrote new descriptions only based on minor differences, that would only be seen as a regional form by today´s standards.

Trichocereus pallarensis has 3 – 6 radial spines (15 – 50 mm long). Those are brown or honey colored and relatively thin compared with the ones on Trichocereus peruvianus and Trichocereus pachanoi. The middle spines are often missing or there is only one very strong and long middle spine. It is very similar to Tr. pachanoi in regards to the spination and most of the spines are only few millimeters long. The areoles are often very small and those packed areoles usually tend to miss the one middle spine as well.

Flowers: Friedrich Ritter was not able to get a good description of the flower and I am working on one myself. The plant is very rare and if you happen to have a flowering sized one, please let me know so we can improve the flower description. With that said, it comes from the Pachanoi group and is probably almost identical to the one of Tr. pachanoi. The flower is definitely white, but I´d love to measure it some more.

Fruit: The fruit of Trichocereus pallarensis is 5 cm long and 4 cm thick. Covered with GRAY wool.
Seeds: The seeds of Trichocereus pallarensis are identical to the ones on other Tr. pachanoi types.

Origin/ Type locality: Trichocereus pallarensis grows in Llancora, near Cajamarca. Near Pallar (that´s where the name comes from) and east of the cordillera Blanca. Department Ancash at 2.500 – 3.000 meters altitude.

Trichocereus pallarensis is very rare and only a few shops have them in stock. This type was originally sold by the European seed shop GNOSTIC GARDEN, who are no longer in business. It should actually read GNOSTIC GARDEN CLONE, but the typo somehow stuck and it was called GNOSIS instead. Maybe we should go back to the original spelling of the name. But due to the fact that this clone was sold as GNOSIS for many years now, it´s probably best to keep everything as it is now.

GNOSTIC GARDEN delivered this clone to a large number of smaller shops, who imported it into Australia in the late 90s or 2000s. The Gnosis Garden Clone became of the most common „Peruvianus“ clones in Australia. And that´s remarkable because it actually is a Trichocereus cuzcoensis ;). The Cuzcoensis/Peruvianus labeling makes me think that this one probably originated from Knize, who is (BY FAR) the biggest source for different types from the Tr. cuzcoensis group  and it´s very likely that Gnostic Garden got their stock from Knize; either directly or indirectly through the hands of another retailer or wholesaler. The wide distribution makes this clone one of the most common strains in Australia. It has massive long spines with rounded spine bases and a typical Cuzcoensis appearance. Due to the fact that Knize has offered all kinds of types from the Cuzcoensis group over the past 50 years, it´s probably not possible to pin this clone down to a certain KK number.

The GNOSIS GARDEN CLONE (GNOSTIC GARDEN) was also sold by the SAB nursery and can be bought from them.

This beautiful Pachanoi is/was distributed by the SAB member Ogun. It has a beautiful bright green epidermis and short stump spines. The plant comes from Cajabamba in Peru and one of its charasteristics is the bright green color. Most of the colums we saw had 6 – 7 ribs, but it´s very possible that new pups differ from that. CLONE ONE looks very healthy and vigorous. If you look very closely, you can see some very fine grains on the epidermis and the shield-shaped areoles are covered with a brown fluff. The clone also has some very strong V-notches, making it a very typical Tr. pachanoi. In a way, it also resembles the Ecuadorian Pachanois.

Flower: Unfortunately, we weren´t able to observe the flower yet but I´ll keep you updated in case I´ll come across a flowering plant for the database.

Where to buy seeds or cuttings: I´ll probably try to get cuttings as soon as they are available. The clone is fairly new in cultivation, which is why it will take 3-5 years until some of them are flowering. I´ll keep you guys updated in case I get anything.

This interesting plant is a Trichocereus bridgesii clone that was originally sourced by the Australian SAB member Sir Jeans, who gave this clone to a handful of people. By sharing this clone over the course of various years, it was distributed into the collections of many people.

Definitely an interesting plant with long spines and a very glaucous Epidermis.  It´s not really completely untypical for a Tr. bridgesii, but it´s definitely one of the most impressive ones out there!

NO, that is not supposed to read „DUCK“. 😉

Chemical Shamans D*ck aka CSD is a new Clone that was introduced by SAB Member Ferret, who brought it into circulation in honor of the Member Chemical Shaman, who unfortunately passed away.

According to Ferret, the Clone was grown from a batch of Trichocereus bridgesii Seed, which were provided by the NOOK Member BEEKER.

The Clones Characteristics are a very stunted, almost monstrous Look with a very unique Spination, which is very unlike other Trichocereus bridgesii. Besides, if seen from above, the Plant has a Look that reminds of a Lophophora williamsii, which is WAY COOl!

At this point, we couldn´t observe a flower yet, but will certainly add Flower Pics as soon as we get some.

BRUCE is a beautiful Trichocereus bridgesii with very broad ribs and a funny spination. Just like many other, BRUCE is a hybrid of Australian origin. Because of the broad ribs, this plant tends to have relatively few ribs. Most plants I´ve seen had between 4 and 6 ribs. The mother plant goes back to the SAB member BLACKDRAGON, who had a giant monster of this amazing plant growing in his garden. He also managed to get it to flower and the flower was relatively typical for a Tr. bridgesii.

BRUCE is said to be somewhat related to the Tr. bridgesii clone EILEEN, that was growing in front of reshroomED´s house. Personally, I would not be surprised if both were grown from similar or the same seed lots. But that´s just speculation and I have yet to hear more detailed information on the background of BRUCE. The plant is also known to show a „melting“ look from time to time, which indicates that this is (at least partially) mutated somehow. BRUCE comes from South Australia and is also very similar to the clone MBN95/ SUPER BRIDGE, which more or less lost as I do not know of anyone who has that  plant with an intact label.

Where to buy cuttings or seeds of BRUCE (Trichocereus bridgesii)?

BRUCE is one of the rarer hybrids from Australia and I know of no breeder that is currently breeding with it. You might try to make a posting at the SAB forum, cactusforum.org or in our Trichocereus Facebook Group!

The Bogan clone has 0ne of the funniest backgrounds of all the clones that are known in the community. It all goes back to the year 2006, when the SAB Member DuG discovered a very cool type of (back then, suspected Trichocereus macrogonus) growing in front of a house. He initially asked for a cutting (which he was lucky enough to get) and next time he got there, he realized that the large motherplants had been hacked down by the „bogan“ homeowners. And not only had they hacked them down, but they also tried to burn them. He immediately asked if he could take them with him and they were more than happy to get rid of them…because…you know, cacti don´t burn so well. Here is DuG´s original picture on SAB just to show you how they were looking back then.

So far, I havent seen a flower pic but I will certainly update this page as soon as I get some. The plants usually have a very bright green epidermis and look very much like the Ecuadorian types. On the earlier pics, they looked a lot more like a peruvianus, but this clone shows it´s genetics on the young growth. But for a pachanoi, it can get very long spines and it definitely is a very cool plant!

Where to buy seeds or plants: Well, I am currently not aware of any real sources for this plant, but I hope to get some seeds sometime soon.. You can ask the SAB customer service to find out if they have any of them in stock. But apart from that, I´d make a posting at SAB or our Trichocereus Facebook Group and ask about them. Because DuG gave away quite a few of them and there still are breeders who have them in their collection.
